Happy Feet Walking Club

MercyCare Mount Vernon kicked off the second season of the Happy Feet Walking Club, Mount Vernon’s free community-wide walking program, on Saturday, Apr. 26.  The open registration event included a health fair, children’s activities and refreshments. Confidential blood-pressure checks and weight readings were also offered.

Registration continues for the walking club.  Those who register receive a complimentary t-shirt, water bottle, walking log and the chance to win weekly prizes from area businesses.  During the course of the club, participants have the opportunity to win the program’s grand prize, general admission for six to the Lost Island Waterpark (or cash equivalent).  Walking takes place at 9 a.m. on Saturday mornings, May 3 through July 5 at the Mount Vernon High School track.

The Happy Feet Walking Club encourages families, friends and neighbors to support each other in the effort to get on the move and become physically and emotionally fit. Studies have revealed that exercise efforts are more successful when reinforced by a support system.

“When you become involved in any exercise effort, including a walking program such as the Happy Feet Walking Club, the support and camaraderie of family and friends is a key aspect to success,” says Monica Meeker, M.D., a physician at MercyCare Mount Vernon. “And, when you exercise with friends, it’s just plain more fun.”

Throughout the program, participants are encouraged to monitor their progress and achieve long-term, positive lifestyle changes. One of the club’s goals is to encourage participants to take part in annual summer 5K walks/runs in Mount Vernon, Lisbon and Solon.  For more information or to register for the Happy Feet Walking Club, please call MercyCare Mount Vernon at 319-895-9010.
